Dahi Vada ( Indian Snack )

Dahi Vada (Indian Snack)


  • 1/2 cup washed soaked mung dal
  • 1/2 cup washed soaked urad dal
  • 1 tea spoon salt 
  • 1/2 tea spoon asafoetida (hing)
  • Oil for frying

For garnish

  • 2 cups curd (yogurt)  
  • Sweet tamarind chutuny (Mithi Emli and khajoor chutuny) 
  • dry roasted  cumin powder
  • chilly  powder
  • cilantro leaves chopped 


  • Mix both the dals and wash it properly.
  • Soak dals in 4 cups of water  for 3 to 4 hours.
  • Drain the water and grind it properly until dal gets in smooth texture, just using  enough water for blending the dal, Do not use too much of water for blending.
  • Add little salt while blending, mixture should be light and fluffy, if needed add 2 to 3 spoons of water.
  • Shift the dal in a bowl add little asafoetida and mix it with spoon.


  • Heat oil in pan , place it in a medium low heat.
  • apply little water in hand and then take a spoon of mixture in a hand and then place it in oil, vada should not be cover with oil so that vada will be expand and will be soft.
  • fry the vada in small batches and fry until they golden brown in color.

After Frying

  • After taking out the vada place it into lukewarm  water.
  •  Then in 1/2 cup of curd add 1/2 cup water and add little salt as well and make it a paste,  this liquid should be like consistency of lussi. 
  • Now remove vada from water squeeze in softly vada should not be break and now add into curd mixture for more then half and hour.


  • Take 4 to 5 spoon of cud in a bowl and 1 spoon of water and mix it well like a cream.
  • Take vada in a serving bowl with curd liquid.
  • Add 2 to 3 spoon of that curd into vada .
  • Now drizzle spoon of sweet tamarind chutuny 
  • Now sprinkle  cumin powder , red chilly powder and then cilantro leaves.
  • Serve the dahi vada.


You can make vada's with urad dal only or moong dal only.
